EUSAAP Conference Tokyo 2026

The EU in the Age of Turbulence: Crises and Beyond

Monday and Tuesday, 1 + 2 June 2026

Hitotsubashi University, Hitotsubashi-Kodo, Tokyo, Japan

Joint organisers are EUSAAP, EUSA Japan and Hitotsubashi University

The 2026 EUSAAP Annual Conference and postgraduate workshop, hosted by Hitotsubashi University and EUSA Japan, will celebrate and revisit the state of EU studies in the region.

The EU is currently facing unprecedented crises, such as the war in Ukraine and the uncertainties brought about by the second Trump administration. European society is being transformed by the current turbulent environment. The conference invites papers exploring these issues from multidisciplinary perspectives, including international relations, political science, law, economics, history, cultural studies, natural and environmental sciences.

The conference shall provide each participant with a deeper understanding of the complexities of the current situation of the EU and its relationships in the wider world, particularly with Asia Pacific areas.

The dialogue between both, established scholars and emerging young voices are of vital importance and we particularly encourage graduate students to give presentations at the Tokyo conference.

Programme

The academic conference will be held over two days (Monday and Tuesday) and participants are expected to attend both days. EUSAAP strongly encourages the participation of early career scholars. The postgraduate workshop will be conference-style presentations and facilitated by experienced academics providing supportive and constructive feedback.

Young students and scholars are typically supported by their universities to attend and present at conferences like EUSAAP which provides an opportunity to showcase the output of their research and network with more seasoned scholars and experts in EU Studies.

The organisers reserve the right to re-arrange panels and presentations at short notice to accommodate operational requirements. Presentations are expected to be 15 minutes in length, allowing approx. 5 minutes Q&A per paper. The session chair will facilitate the discussion.
