2016 Conference & Postgraduate Workshop

hk by night new

The 2016 EUSA AP Annual Conference and Postgraduate Student workshop will be held in Hong Kong on Wednesday, 29 and Thursday, 30 June 2016. The Postgraduate Workshop will be one day only, and Postgraduate students are encouraged to attend the conference on the second day. The conference will be held at the Hong Kong Baptist University. The theme will be

30 Years after the Single European Act

The Single European Act (SEA) was the first major revision of the 1957 Treaty of Rome. The Act set the European Community an objective of establishing a Single market by 31 December 1992, and codified European Political Cooperation, the forerunner of the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy. It was signed in Luxembourg on 17 February 1986.

The conference will discuss research findings on sub-themes in relation to the Single European Act and the Asia Pacific relationship, such as how have relationships been influenced? What has changed? Is the Single Market sufficient?

Asia Pacific countries are significantly connected with Europe and the EU. Therefore, any changes in European policies will affect many different regions. The EUSA AP feel it is timely to hold a conference that focuses on the 30th anniversary of the European Single Act. Is there more continuity or change in the EU - Asia Pacific relationship? How do different groups perceive the EU and any change it its relationship to the region?

The conference proposed to discuss the following sub-themes in further detail:

  • External Relations of the EU
  • The Future of EU - Asia Pacific Relations: Competition or Cooperation?
  • Common Foreign and Security Policy: Problems and Prospects
  • The Eurozone Crisis
  • Future of EU Political Cooperation: Integration at a crossroads?
  • Limits of Institutions in solving cross-regional problems
  • Role of Cultural Differences in cross-regional relationships
  • Do Politics matter? - Domestic Political systems and the limits of EU-Asia Pacific relations
  • Energy and Security
  • Free Trade in times of economic downturn

The aim is to investigate these topics from both, an European and an Asia Pacific perspective. The conference will also be multi-disciplinary in focus. As relationships are not single-faceted, we aim to pool expertise froma wide range of fields to develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of the relationships and understand the broad range of areas that can be impacted by international political and economic issues. The EUSA AP is by nature multi-disciplinary and previous conferences have drawn together experts from disciplines such as History, Political Sciences, Law, Economics and Cultural & Language Studies. With this conference we would also invite participants from areas such as Sociology and Geography.
